The Medela Freestyle Breast Pump is one of the leading breast pumps in the Medela Range. Known as the ‘first hands-free double electric pump’, it is one of the most portable, literally fitting in the palm of your hand. In addition, the pump motor itself has a clip which you can attach to a belt or your waist band. (You should take extra precautions that this is secure as we’ve had feed back – and personal experience ! – that this tends to fall off after a while)
If you have a 101 things on your to do list, this might be the pump for you. Hook it on your blouse, slot it in your pocket and enjoy pumping on the go while you cook, clean or do any other activities that you can do upright ( Bending forward may result in the milk spilling through the opening in the breast shield.)
As one of the newest pumps of the Medela range, there hasn’t been much reviews about the longevity of this pump. As normal rechargeable batteries goes, its capacity and strength decreases over time. However, the freestyle can also be powered by a power socket which eliminates the suction issues. The table below shows the features of the Freestyle and the pros and cons of owning a set.
|*Medela 2 Phase Technology, which claims to be the closest technology mimicking a baby's feeding pattern.|
* 9 levels to control the speed and suction to a level most comfortable for you.
*One touch letdown button which Medela claims can assist in increasing the volume of milk pumped.
* Backlit LCD screen with a digital timer
* Memory to preset pumping levels
|* Display screen shows suction level and let down function level.|
* The digital timer on screen means you don't need to watch the clock as you pump.
*The back lit screen allows you to pump in the dark - perfect for then the little one is sleeping.
*Perfect for a busy mom : The pump can be clipped on a belt and has a built in rechargeable battery so you can be as mobile during the entire pumping process.
*Small size and lightweight motor that can be brought anywhere.
* Lightweight breast shields can be used with handsfree accessories like Simple Wishes.
* Memory Function : Pre -set pumping levels means you do not have to adjust the suction level everytime you pump.
* Milk Overflow Protection System means that milk would not get into the tubes.
|* Pump loses its suction when battery power is low - you might have to bring along the adapter.
* Reviews indicate that the recharagable battery may not stay at its optimum power over a few years.
* Freestyle accessories like the membrane and Breast shield Connectors needs to be dry for the suction to function at its best.
*The Handsfree Kit that comes with the Freestyle is extremely flimsy and a hassle to attach.
Medela Freestyle Parts
As per the Medela Freestyle US Website, the following parts and accessories are included in the Medela Freestyle Set. If you are ordering from outside the US or from a retailer that’s not listed on the Medela US site, you should check the parts included in the kit.
The Freestyle pump motor is the unique feature that separates the freestyle from the rest of the pumps on the market. Small, lightweight and fixed with a clip, the Medela Freestyle is designed with the busy mum in mind. The digital screen shows information like pumping and letdown suction level ( choose your comfort level from level 1- level 9), a timer so you don’t need to watch the clock while pumping and is back lit so you can pump in the dark in case you are in a room where the little one is asleep. The battery level is also shown on the screen. One unique feature of the Medela Freestyle is the memory function which enables you to set a suction level you are comfortable with, which will automatically be triggered when you use the pump. Compared to other breast pumps, the noise generated by the freestyle is relatively low.
2) Breast Shields
Medela uses includes the standard 24mm breastshield with most of its pumps. The Freestyle Set comes with an additional pair of Large Sized or 27mm Personal Fit Breastshield instead. Apart from more comfortable pumping, a correctly fit breastshield may allow you to collect more milk.

3) Breast shield Bodies or Connectors
The freestyle Breast shield connector comes in 3 parts, the front body, the yellow rubber membrane and the back cap. The tube with the suction is connected to the back cap and the suction is controlled by the rubber membrane. Because of this, its important for the entire breast shield connector to be dry when used. Moisture can affect the suction power.
This backshield design also features a milk protection system which means the milk flows directly into the bottle and not up the tube.
The Freestyle uses one single tube which has 3 ends. The 2 shorter ends connect to the Breast Shield Connector while the longer ‘ tail connects to the pump motor. The tubing does not to be washed or sterilized after each use but if moisture gets into it you can just run the motor with the tube still connected. If you only intend to pump on one side, you slot one of the tube ends into the yellow middle section of the tube.
