Looking for supplements to increase milk? Read this first.
With the exception of mothers who have ample milk supply, we understand how frustrating it is to NOT have sufficient milk. Whether it is staring at the dismal amount you just pump or when you’re faced with a crying child, the first thing that comes to mind is the issue of milk supply.
But STOP! No matter how desperate you are, we don’t encourage reliance on supplements just to increase your milk supply.
There are plenty of methods you should try before jumping in to consume every single supplement you can get your hands on, for example, improving your latch, power pumping and massaging techniques and of course drinking lots of water to increase your supply. Always consult your lactation consultant or your doctor before diagnosing yourself with low milk supply.
We’ve also found the following book extremely useful in explaining the process of milk making and techniques to improve your supply. ( Including an extremely exhaustive list of galactagogues and food to avoid! )
Step 1 : Eliminate foods that reduce breast milk supply
You may also want to check your existing diet to eliminate items that can wreak havoc on your supply. Some items that can reduce milk supply include herbs like :
- Peppermint and Spearmints (even in sweets!)
- Cabbage ( not a herb but one of the veggies known to reduce supply)
- Lemon Balm
- Stinging Nettle
You might want to refer to Kelly Mom’s Guide on reducing Milk (http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/herbs/herbs-oversupply/) to eliminate herbs that can cause a decrease in supply.
Some mothers argue that you need to take copious amounts to reduce supply but for some unlucky mothers, (myself included), just a tinge led to an unfortunate dip.
Step 2: Slowly introduce food and supplements that can increase milk supply
(Most supplements are available on Iherb.com, First time customers can use the iherb discount code OFU937 to get$10 off your purchase. )
Here at Best Breast pump Reviews For Moms, we find it intriguing that mothers of different cultures, consume a variety of food to increase their supply. So this is a short list of food and supplements that mothers have found useful.
Be sure to include these items gradually and wait at least 3-5 days to see whether it leads to an increase in milk supply. Consuming too much too soon would lead to an oversupply which could lead to worse problems like blocked ducts. At the same time, you have to remember that your milk supply is governed by the laws of demand and supply i.e. you need to remove more milk from your body to signal that it needs to produce more.
