Origins: Ameda Breast Pumps
Ameda breast pump technology is a legacy of the work of Swedish engineer Einar Egnall. Their pumps today, combine years of his research and experience with today’s technology – in the process, winning over the hearts of many breastfeeding mothers. Ameda is one of the more popular brand names in the among breastfeeding circles in the US, partly because of their good quality and the fact that their pumps and accessories are easily available and widely used by mothers in the US and around the world. Ameda also offers a range of hospital grade pumps, used by delivery wards in a number of hospitals.
What is Ameda’s closed system technology?
Ameda is famous for its closed system technology (also known as their Proven Airlock Protection Tm), which unlike other pumps, means that there is no contact between the air suction and the milk. This is an advantage for two reasons:
1) The milk is not at risk of getting sucked into the tube. No milk in tubes = No risk of mould growth = No need to wash and clean the tubes other than wiping it down after use.
2) The tubes are not in direct contact with the milk.
Quite often in other brands, the tubes can be a source of contamination as mould grows because of moisture in the tubes. Since Ameda pumps are not supposed to be washed, there is a lesser risk of mould growth. This also means that there is direct air contact, i.e. less contaminants is introduced to the milk.
Although Ameda’s closed system or Proven Airlock Protection (TM) makes it suitable for it to be passed down to other mothers (only if you purchase a brand new HygeniKit!) , there is a risk of pump burnout. The pump is most efficient when it is used for less than 400 hours, and buying a second hand set without knowledge of how long it has been used, is not really advisable. You can watch this youtube video of the Proven Airlock Protection System and its benefits.
What you should know
If you have your hearts set on an Ameda pump, you should be at ease knowing that there are not many models to choose from. The main breast pump is the Ameda Purely Yours and the other Ameda pumps are named differently because of what is included in the accessories set. This brand also has an international range of breast pumps which may not be catered for mothers in the US.

Breast Flange and Flexi Shield ™ Areola Stimulator
Ameda’s Breast Flanges come in multiple sizes and if you purchase a standard set, you will receive the 25 mm flange. (If you opt for the Purely Yours Ultra, you would receive 3 Breastshield sizes). However, you can purchase separate sized ones in the event that the standard 25 mm size ones are too small. Apart from the breast flanges of various sizes, Ameda also has inserts ( literally smaller sized flanges to be inserted into the larger sized ones) for those who are in between existing sizes so you can find the best fit for yourself.
Ameda Flanges sizes
- XXL – 36.0mm
- XL – 32.5 mm (insert)
- L – 30.5 mm
- M- 28.5 mm (insert)
- Standard – 25.0 mm
- Areola Stimulator – 21.0mm
Do all mothers need to use the Ameda Areola Stimulator?
The 21.0 mm areola stimulator is a soft flange insert that is designed to help stimulate a let down reflex. However it is designed for mothers with small nipples, and shouldn’t be used by mothers with regular or larger sized breasts as they can cause unnecessary obstruction due to the flow, which can lead to blocked ducts or milk blisters. You may wish to refer to the following guideline by Ameda to ensure that you are using the optimal breast flange size.
Cooler bag : Freezer Pack and Cool N’ Carry ™ Milk Storage Tote
The Ameda Cool N Carry ™ Milk storage Bag is a small nylon zippered bag designed to fit 3 Ameda cooling elements and 6 4-oz bottles. A quick tip is to freeze the ice packs the night before and they will keep the breastmilk cool for a couple of hours without refrigeration the next day.
The standard bottles are BPA free plastic bottle and has a 4 oz, capacity, with either normal lids or those with a disc that can be removed and replaced with a bottle nipple for direct feeding.
Store and Pour ™ Storage Bags
The Store and Pour ™ storage bags are a convenient way to store bm, especially if you are freezing excess supply for future use. The unique design makes it easy to pour defrosted milk directly from the bag, similar to the way a tetra pack works.
Purely Yours Breast Pump Car Adaptor
The Purely Yours Pump comes with a battery compartment but in the event you run out of battery on a long car ride, there is always the car adaptor!
Not all the sets come with a car adaptor so if this is an essential accessory to you, be sure to purchase one that does (or as a separate accessory).
